Are there any mandatory training or exam requirements to take an AWS Certification exam?

No. AWS says training is recommended but not mandatory, and that its certifications can be earned without specific prerequisites. AWS answers this question itself, as shown in the United States on 13 October 2026: "Training is recommended as part of your certification preparation, but it is not mandatory for the completion of the certification."

AWS's certification policies page covers prerequisites: "All AWS Certifications may be earned without completing specific prerequisites. However, AWS provides recommendations for knowledge and experience that are aligned to the content and level of proficiency for each certification."

What AWS recommends instead. The FAQ puts experience first: "The best preparation for certification exams is practical experience." For this certification, the exam page describes the person it is aimed at: "The ideal candidate for this exam has at least 1 year of experience in machine learning engineering or a related field and 1 year of hands-on experience with AWS services." The exam guide for the updated version, MLA-C02, adds: "The target candidate should have at least 1 year of experience using Amazon SageMaker AI, Amazon Bedrock, and other AWS services for ML engineering." AWS presents these profiles as recommendations, in its own words: "AWS recommends that you have professional experience aligned to the competencies, domains, and objectives outlined in each exam's guide". The exam page lists two versions side by side, MLA-C02 (marked "Updated - Beta") and MLA-C01, each with its own intended-candidate line.

One stated condition. The policies page sets one for younger candidates: "Candidates ages 13-17 are permitted to take AWS Certification exams with the consent of a parent or legal guardian."

What we couldn't find. The AWS pages we read on 13 October 2026 do not describe any check of training or experience when you register for the exam.

What you can do.

Measure yourself against the exam guide. AWS says the guide is where "you will also find specific recommendations on the type and depth of experience expected."
If you have no machine learning background, the exam page says: "Professionals who do not have prior machine learning experience can take the training available in the Exam Prep Plans and get started building their knowledge and skills." The FAQ points to "AWS Skill Builder" for a learning plan.
