Google Cloud Generative AI Leader vs. Professional Machine Learning Engineer: Gen AI for Business or ML in Production

Both are Google Cloud certification exams about AI, but they test different jobs. Generative AI Leader checks business-level knowledge of generative AI and of Google Cloud's gen AI offerings; Professional Machine Learning Engineer checks the skills to build, deploy and monitor machine learning and gen AI solutions on Google Cloud. Facts below are as shown in the United States on 14 October 2026.

Choose Generative AI Leader if you lead or influence gen AI initiatives, with or without hands-on technical experience, and want an exam on gen AI fundamentals, Google Cloud's gen AI offerings and business strategy.

Choose Professional Machine Learning Engineer if you build, deploy and monitor ML models on Google Cloud and have, or are close to, the recommended 3+ years of industry experience including 1 or more years designing and managing solutions using Google Cloud.

Scope

Generative AI Leader assesses gen AI fundamentals, Google Cloud's gen AI offerings, techniques to improve gen AI model output, and business strategies for a gen AI solution. Google says it is for anyone in any job role, with or without hands-on technical experience.

Professional Machine Learning Engineer assesses low-code AI solutions, managing data and models across teams, scaling prototypes into ML models, serving and scaling models, ML pipelines, and monitoring AI solutions. Google says it does not directly assess coding skill, and that minimum proficiency in Python and SQL should be enough to interpret code snippets. The exam was updated for the move from Vertex AI to Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.

Neither exam has prerequisites; Google's FAQs say anyone at least 18 years old can take its exams.

Exam Time and Format

These are exam sitting times, not study estimates. Both exams are online-proctored or onsite-proctored at a testing center. Google shows a provisional pass or fail on screen, confirms results in 7-10 days and reports only pass or fail, not a numerical score.

Cost

As shown in the United States on 14 October 2026, the registration fee is $99 for Generative AI Leader and $200 for Professional Machine Learning Engineer, plus tax where applicable. Google's exam terms require payment each time you take an exam. Professional exams allow at most four attempts in two years, with waits of 14, then 60, then 365 days after failed attempts. The Generative AI Leader page does not name its certification tier, and retake limits depend on the tier.

Credential, Validity and Renewal

Both certifications appear as a digital badge in Google's Credential Wallet, powered by Credly, which you can share to LinkedIn. Generative AI Leader is valid for 3 years and can be renewed within its renewal eligibility period. Professional certifications are valid for two years. Google's renewal table for professional certifications other than Cloud Architect and Data Engineer shows the window opening 60 days before the inactive date, no shorter renewal exam, and continuing education not yet available; you renew by passing the exam again, and fees and retake rules apply.
